"This book takes on the subject of military victory parades in New York City during the first half of the 20th century and looks on these performances as political street theater. The study shows how abstract concepts like the nation-state or Americanism were represented and embodied in these events. With its focus on the three main groups of actors involved in the parades (organizers, soldiers, spectators), the book demonstrates how these marches can only be understood as a collaboration of these actors-- each group interpreting the event in their very distinct ways.
