24 septembre 1969 : à Chicago (Illinois), ouverture d'un procès de 8 activistes (opposés
à la guerre au Vietnam) accusés d'incitation à l'émeute et de conspiration contre
l'État, du fait d'avoir organisé des manifestations - violemment réprimées - en marge
de la Convention démocrate de Chicago de la fin août 1968 (désignation comme candidat
à l'élection présidentielle d'Hubert Humphrey, vice-président de Lyndon Johnson -
qui ne se représente pas). Les débats tournent au cirque politique, du fait de l'attitude
jugée impartiale du juge Julius Hoffmann, et de ses différents avec l'un des prévenus,
Bobby Seale, dirigeant Black Panther, qu'il fait baillonner et attacher à sa chaise.
Bobby Seale est sorti du procès pour être jugé à part (il est condamné à 4 ans de
prison à la fin de 1969). Le 18 février 1970, les Sept de Chicago sont acquittés du
chef de conspiration et d'incitation à l'émeute, mais 5 d'entre eux sont tout de même
condamnés à une amende de 5000 dollars et une peine de 5 ans de prison pour le chef
de franchissement illégal de frontière d'État. En 1972, une cour d'appel les lève
de tout soupçon.
