Résumé : "What is Enlightenment?" In 1783, this question was put to the readers of a Berlin monthly magazine. The present publication takes it as the starting point for an exploration of the key ideas and debates of the Enligtenment, revealing inherent conflicts over the concepts and demands of the era. Notions such as equality and tolerance were prevalent, but in some ways they were undertood differently than today and were often not put into practice. The authors offer a variety of international perspectives on many of the themes that characterize the "long eighteenth century", such as the pursuit of knowledge and scientific progress, the questioning of religion, notions of equality and freedom, and demands for civil rights, in the contexts of mercantilism and cosmopolitanism" [source 4e de couverture]
