Résumé : "The Zeri Photo Library holds an important collection of over 14,000 old photographs,
which the Foundation has been studying and cataloging for years. They are precious
prints (coals, aristotypes, albumines, gelatins with silver salts) made between 1870
and 1920 that represent works of painting, sculpture and monuments. It is a very varied
material for provenance, techniques and authors, which has a considerable interest
both in the history of art and in the history of photography. Through sixteen case
studies, chosen among the many possible in Zeri's photographic archive and illustrated
by an accurate set of images, the volume investigates the multiple aspects related
to photography of artistic historical reproduction between the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. In particular, we wanted to highlight the possible links between works
of art and photography. The work is enriched by a repertoire of 85 photographers working
in that period. Some are famous names, others are almost unknown to literature, but
their activity deserves investigation. The publication was made possible thanks to
the experience and skills of the Federico Zeri Foundation in the study, conservation
and cataloging of these important historical materials. The essays are the result
of a research that has led in many cases to unpublished results."
