"The analytical challenge in such constantly shifting environments, explained Friedrich
Hayek in his 1974 Nobel acceptance speech, is to understand an economy as an 'organized
complexity.' Although the term 'complex systems' wasn't yet well established, Hayek
recognized structures of 'essential complexity' whose characteristics depend 'not
only on the properties of the individual elements of which they are composed, and
the relative frequency with which they occur, but also on the manner in which the
individual elements are connected with each other'"
