Note(s) : Memoirs of a Viennese Jew, born in 1924. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom the family
(parents, son and daughter) fled to Belgium, and in 1939 to the south of France, to
the town of Revel. In late 1940 they were interned as foreigners in the camp at Agde,
but were soon allowed to return to Revel. In August 1942 they were interned in Noé.
In September, Paul and his mother and sister were transported to Drancy and from there
to Auschwitz. His father remained in Noé because he was ill with tuberculosis; later
he died in a hospital in Revel. Schaffer's mother and sister were gassed on arrival
in Auschwitz. He was sent from there to labor camps in Tarnowitz and Schoppinitz until
November 1943, when he was returned to Auschwitz. After seven months, in May 1944,
he was sent to Bobrek, a sub-camp of Monowitz, to work in a Siemens factory. In January
1945 he participated in a death march to Gleiwitz, from which he managed to escape
and hide until his liberation by the Russians. Then, he returned to France. Pp. 7-15
contain a foreword by Simone Veil, who had met Schaffer in the labor camp in Bobrek.
Pp. 143-152 contain an epilogue by the translator relating how the German edition
came to be published
