The goal of this study on the imaginary feminine in Ovid's Metamorphoses is to identify
the true relationship between the elegaic and the epic Ovid in the Metamorphoses,
and to demonstrate the central role of women in all of Ovid's poetic work. In the
Metamorphoses, the poet describes a great variety of feminine aspects, and suggests
a true catalog of women: the nymph-woman, dedicated to chastity, the androgynous woman,
the seductress, the virgin martyr, the passionate woman. This study suggests that
such description of women shows Ovid's deep understanding of the feminine. An analysis
of figures such as Daphne, Io, and Callisto bears witness to the poet's unique psychological
and descriptive abilities
