330 .. $a "This slender volume is the result of research that spanned a decade. It was inspired
by my reading casual references to the Jenkins' Orphanage Bands in the reminiscences
of several well-known jazz musician. When I look into the bands history and discovered
that ex-members has worked with jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson,
James Europe, The southern Syncopated Orchestra, Bessie Smith, Luis, Lionel Hampton,
Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie, I realized that I was investing an important part
of African American musical heritage-one that has been virtually ignored by other
researchers. The fact that a Jenkins's Band firs came to Europe before 1900 further
stimulated my interest." John Chilton. From foreword
