בשנות העשרים של המאה הקודמת התחולל מפנה בזירת הספרות העברית: לראשונה החלו להתפרסם בכתבי עת ספרותיים שירים פרי עטן של נשים. המשוררות הבולטות בקבוצה זו היו רחל בלובשטיין, אסתר ראב, יוכבד בת מרים ואלישבע ביחובסקי, ויצירתן סללה דרכים חדשות בשירה העברית החדשה ושינתה את פניה ללא הכר. באיזו מידה היו ארבע המשוררות ערות למעמדן החלוצי בשדה השירה העברית? כיצד הן ראו את מעשה הכתיבה שלהן-עצמן ואילו משמעויות הן ייחסו לו? עד כמה זיעזעה כניסתן אל עולמה של השירה העברית את תפיסת הזהות הנשית שלהן? כיצד התמודדה כל אחת מהן עם המשמעיות של כניסתה למועדון הגברי הסגור עד אז של השירה העברית, וכיצד השפיע מהלך זה על יחסי האהבה של המשוררות עם גברים? ספר זה מציע תשובות חדשות ומרתקות על שאלות אלו באמצעות קריאות פרשניות פסיכואנליטיות ופמיניסטיות בשירתן של המשוררות העבריות הראשונות.
