Titre(s) : Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the militant ruler of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Imam of Iran's Shi'ite Muslims, gained political power during the Iranian Revolution of 1979. On February 1, 1979, in the final days of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi's regime, Khomeini returned to Iran after 15 years in exile in Turkey, Iraq and France. Since his return to the holy city of Qum, Khomeini has applied his 64 years of philosophical study and the principles of the Koran and Shari'a (islamic law) to Iranian life and politics. Since November, 1979, militant Iranian students answerable to Khomeini have held 52 American hostages. Titre(s) : In Teheran's Bazaar -a main commercial and business area- the owners return to re-open their stalls and shops. Most of the bazaar's hundreds of businesses had been closed for months from the time the Shah first began to come under serious attack from within Iran and this shutdown had a significant economic effect since some of the Bazaar's owners are among the richest and influential Muslims in the Country and their refusal to re-open at the Shah's request elped to undermine confidence in the hated monarch. Today the Bazaar is back in business selling everything from candles to fabulously expensive Persian carpets and rugs and a new line in souvennirs.
