Construit vers 80 avant J.-C. grâce à la libéralité des 2 duumvirs quinquennaux Caius
Quinctius Valgus et Marcus Porcius, l'amphithéâtre de Pompéi, situé dans l'angle sud-est
de l'enceinte de la ville (regio II, insula 6), est certainement l'un des plus anciens
du monde romain, mais aussi l'un des mieux conservés. D'une capacité d'env. 20 000
places, élevé sur 3 niveaux, il est le théâtre d'une rixe sanglante en 59, opposant
les spectateurs de Pompéi à ceux de la ville voisine de Nocera, à tel point que Néron
et le Sénat de Rome en interdisent l'utilisation pendant 10 ans. Le terme "amphithéâtre"
n'existant pas encore au moment de sa construction, une dédicace nous apprend que
ce lieu était alors dénommé "spectacula" (lieux de spectacles). En 1748, un archéologue
sondant l'endroit, mais croyant qu'il venait de découvrir les ruines de Stabies, l'appelle
"teatro stabiano" ; c'est en 1823 qu'il est finalement véritablement dégagé.
