A Pompéi, les archéologues ont divisé la ville en 9 secteurs ('regiones' - au singulier
: 'regio'), numérotés en chiffres romains, eux-mêmes divisés en 'insulae' (quartiers
avec habitations et monuments publics), numérotées en chiffres arabes - normalement
une 'insula' désigne un immeuble, mais à Pompéi, le choix a été fait de la désigner
comme un îlot urbain. L'insula 1 de la regio VI se trouve à l'angle nord-ouest de
celle-ci, débouchant sur la porta di Ercolano, et bordée à l'ouest par la via Consolare.
