Une station d'observation des phénomènes physiques du soleil fut créée en 1951 sur
l'île de Capri, Italie, par l'Académie royale des sciences de Suède. - À partir de
1974, elle fut progressivement transférée sur l'île de La Palma, Espagne. - En 1979
fut signé un accord international décidant de la création à La Palma d'un observatoire
espagnol ouvert aux chercheurs d'autres pays. - L' "Observatorio del Roque de los
Muchachos" a été officiellement inauguré en 1985 ; avec l' "Observatorio del Teide"
(Tenerife), il est géré par l' "Instituto de astrofísica de Canarias".
L' "Institute for solar physics" de Stockholm (= "Institutet för solfysik"), qui fait remonter sa naissance à la création en 1951 de la "Research station for astrophysics", est présent à La Palma en tant que "Grupo sueco del Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos".
