Ancienne plantation (tabac) de Virginie, propriété de la famille Washington - où naquit
George Washington en 1732 - sise au bord du Potomac, au sud de l'actuelle Colonial
Beach. D'abord nommée Popes Creek, du nom de la crique bordant le Potomac au bord
de laquelle elle se trouvait précisément, la propriété fut assez vite rebaptisée Wakefield,
avant d'être classée "national monument" en 1930 et renommée George Washington Birthplace
National Monument. La maison natale de George Washington disparue dans un incendie
du 25 décembre 1779 et jamais reconstruite, on reconstruisit à côté au 19e siècle
une ferme typique de l'époque pour en évoquer l'atmosphère.
