United States Marine Corps General. He was a Captain in the United States Army during
World War, and, after resigning from the Army in 1919, enlisted in the Marine Corps
as a Private in 1922. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1923 and served as
an intelligence and operations officer before resigning as a Captain in 1939. Commissioned
a Major in the Marine Reserves in 1941, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in command
of the Second Marine Raider Battalion, a commando force which became known as Carlson's
