Fondé en 1919, issu d'une scission du Parti du congrès lorsque ce dernier rejeta les
réformes proposées en 1918 par Montagu et Chelmsford en vue d'un gouvernement autonome
de l'Inde. - A joué un rôle dans l'"India act" de 1935 qui accorde une large autonomie
interne à l'Inde. - S'est retiré de la vie politique avec le retour du Parti du congrès
dans la voie constitutionnelle en 1937.
