Pasteur presbytérien, il rompit avec son Église pour lancer avec son père Thomas et
le pasteur Walter Scott un mouvement religieux baptiste, les "Disciples", qui se fondit
avec les "Christians" du prédicateur Barton W. Stone dans les années 1830-1831, et
devint célèbre sous le nom de "Stone-Campbell movement".
