Orchestre de jazz formé par Glenn Miller à l'université de Yale, Conn. pour la Radio
des forces de l'armée de l'air américaine en mars 1943, qu'il dirigea jusqu'à sa mort
(décembre 1944). - Il y associa de nombreux musiciens et chanteurs, le groupe Crew
chiefs, la section rythmique de Ray McKinley ou encore la section de cordes Strings
with wings du chef d'orchestre George Ockner. - Outre les programmes de radio I sustain
the wings ou Uncle Sam presents, alimenta la marque V Discs, à destination des camps
de l'Armée américaine, et la collection Music from America (1944) utilisée par l'Office
of war information à l'étranger, et connue sous le nom de Psychological warfare recordings.
- Avant 1943, porte le nom de Army air force's training command orchestra ou 418th
Army air force's technical training command orchestra. - En été 1944, lors de son
arrivée en Grande-Bretagne, porte les appellations de : American band of supreme allied
command ou Band of the training command of the AAF (ou AEF), American band of the
AEF, AAF band ou AEF orchestra. - Après la mort de Glenn Miller, porte encore le nom
de Glenn Miller's American band of the AEF, sous la direction de Jerry Gray (1945).
