Plus grande ville de l'Alabama, capitale du comté de Jefferson, à l'extrémité sud
des Appalaches. Elle fut fondée en 1871, autour d'une mine de fer. Ville ouvrière,
elle se trouva également au coeur des luttes pour les droits civiques au 20e siècle.
