Jeune noble de Mercie qui renonce à la vie militaire pour se faire ermite à Crowland
(ou Croyland). - L'église édifiée sur son tombeau par Aethelbald, roi de Mercie, deviendra
plus tard l'abbaye de Crowland. - Peu après sa mort, vers 740, Félix de Crowland rédige
en latin une "Vita sancti Guthlaci", dont il existe une version en prose anglo-saxonne
tardive, composée en Mercie. La "Vita" est également la source des deux poèmes anglo-saxons
du IXe siècle intitulés "Guthlac",, qui figurent dans l'Exeter book.
