Note(s) : "Dr. Rowland Willard traveled from St. Charles, Missouri, to Taos, New Mexico, in
1825, where he spent three months before moving on to Chihuahua, Mexico, where he
practiced medicine for three years before returning to the United States. He kept
trail diaries for his travels and later wrote an autobiography based on his recollections
and diaries. Dr. Willard thus became only the third traveler to keep an account of
traveling the Santa Fe Trail from its inception in 1821 and the first medical doctor
to do so. His accounts, now in the rare book and manuscript collections of the Beinecke
Library at Yale, are also some of the earliest of an American in Mexico. Poole has
transcribed, edited, annotated, and introduced the material in a single volume"
