Il doit son nom à l'ancienne propriétaire du terrain où il se dresse, Charlotte von Gentzkow. Inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco au titre du bien "Châteaux et parcs de Potsdam et Berlin" (1990).
