Esclave africain appartenant à un capitaine espagnol, avec lequel il prit part à l'expédition
de Pánfilo de Narváez, chargé par le roi Charles V en 1526, d'explorer et coloniser
la côte nord du Golfe du Mexique. L'expédition échoua ; et sur 300 hommes environ,
seuls 4 survécurent, dont Estevan. Au terme de 8 ans de survie et de voyage dans le
sud-ouest de l'Amérique du Nord, ils rejoignirent les Espagnols à Mexico.
