Converti au mormonisme en 1838, il devint l'un des dirigeants de l'Église, mais fut
excommunié en 1870 pour sa participation au massacre de Mountain Meadows (septembre
1857) dans lequel sa responsabilité est controversée. - Capturé en 1874, il fut condamné
à mort et fusillé.
