En 1911, par la L. Sherman antitrust, le démantèlement de la « Standard Oil (SO) »
fondée par John D. Rockefeller conduit à la formation de 34 sociétés indépendantes
(SO Californie : Chevron ; SO Indiana : Amoco) dont certaines gardent le droit d'utiliser
la marque Standard Oil dans certains États américains ou pays, comme la « Standard
Oil of New Jersey (SONJ - New Jersey Standard) » qui prend progressivement le nom
d' « Eastern States Standard Oil (ESSO) ».
En 1972, la SONJ change sa raison sociale en « Exxon Corporation », premier groupe pétrolier mondial dont les filiales à l'étranger portent le sigle ESSO. - 30 novembre 1999, « Exxon Corporation » et « Mobil Oil Company » fusionne leurs activités pour former la nouvelle société « ExxonMobil Corporation ».
