Le "Commonwealth bureau of census and statistics" est établi en 1905 par le "Census and statistics act", au départ à Melbourne, rattaché au "Department of home affairs" ; en 1928 transféré à Canberra et en 1932 rattaché au "Treasury". - En 1974 le "Commonwealth bureau of census and statistics" est aboli et remplacé par le "Australian bureau of statistics", établi par le "Australian bureau of statistics act" en 1975.
