"...ספר הגירושין הכיל במקורו חמישים וחמישה פרקים, כפי שעולה מדברי רב שמואל בפתיחתו לספר, שכן בסוף הפתיחה הוא מנה את כותרות הפרקים. הצלחתי לשחזר את הכותרות של חמישים ואחד הפרקים הראשונים. מן החיבור גופו שרדו עשרים ואחד פרקים, מתוכם שלושה עשר באופן מלא או קרוב לכך, ואילו שמונה שרדו באופן חלקי בלבד: מספר שורות ואף פחות מכך. ארבעת הפרקים האחרונים של החיבור לא שרדו ואף איננו יודעים מה היו הנושאים שנדונו בהם. אורך הפרקים אינו אחיד. יש פרקים שלמים שאורכם כמה שורות בכתב היד ואחרים שאורכם כמה עמודים, ועל כן קשה לדעת איזה חלק מן החיבור השלם הגיע לידינו..." יהודה צבי שטמפפר מתוך ראשית דבר.
